TASTE AND SMELL – The Perfect Combination

Updated: Aug 1

Herbs and Spices that can enhance taste and add pleasant aroma of food and drinks

  • Cinnamon - used to flavor chocolate, yams, cinnamon rolls, cookies, apple and peach pies and cobblers. Cinnamon sticks can spice up hot tea. Put a few sticks in a pot of simmering water and its aroma will fill the room.

  • Sage – a little goes a long way especially if ground. Leaves may be fresh or dried. Use as a seasoning in soups, stews, and casseroles.

  • Peppermint – Add a touch of fresh mint to vegetable salads, pesto, salsas, sauces, marinades, and pasta salads. Add peppermint flavor extract to cookies, cakes, a cup of hot chocolate, coffee, or tea.

  • Turmeric – seasoning for bean dishes, rice dishes, whole grains, soups, stews, sauces, and marinades.

  • Cayenne pepper – add a dash of ground or chopped fresh scrambled eggs, quiches, egg salad, soups, and stews. Put a kick into seasoned flour for fried chicken.

  • Rosemary – goes well with many foods. Use as a seasoning in soups, casseroles, salads, and stews. Use rosemary with chicken and other poultry, game, lamb, pork, steaks, and fish. It also goes well with grains, mushrooms, onions, peas, potatoes, and spinach.

  • Garlic - Use sliced garlic for sautés, stir-fries, and quick sauces. Use whole or thick cuts for long simmering soups. Minced garlic for dressing, salsa, and dips.
